MJKVDL 2021

MJKVDL 2021 from Chateau International is the first published survey of the work of architect-turned-clothing designer Mark Jan Krayenhoff van de Leur. Shot largely in the Berlin home Mark shares with his husband, the artist AA Bronson, the book uses the language of the fashion look book to explore a deeply personal design practice in which singular garments are infused with autobiographical narratives. Mark’s one-off designs emerge from labour-intensive and formally unique processes; as Madeleine Morley writes in the book’s essay, “this open questioning of norms, commitment to materials, and holistic thinking combines to form Mark’s singular queering of Modernism, at once true to its egalitarian mission and resistant to prescriptive codification”.

Sunspel | How To Spend It

“Sunspel, founded as an underwear and textile company in 1860, has already had to shift and adapt to changing circumstances. The Great Depression of 1929 prompted the business to move from its big factory in Nottingham, shipping a wide range of garments and textiles globally, to a smaller operation in Long Eaton, where it could focus exclusively on the domestic market and premium underwear in the finest Sea Island cotton. The move “was purely to survive”. Sunspel stabilised, then war broke out and the company had to change tack again, “producing utility underwear for the RAF, and long johns under the rationing stamp, CC41”, says Brooke. It went on to introduce the boxer short to Britain in 1947 and, in the 1980s, it sent teenage hearts thumping in the wake of a Levi’s TV ad featuring Nick Kamen in a launderette, stripping down to his pristine white Sunspel undies.

Despite the quality fabrics – recognised by luxury wholesale clients such as Margaret Howell, Paul Smith, Thom Browne and Japanese stores including Isetan, Beams and United Arrows…” {link to full article}

Margaret Howell in conversation with Ken Stradling

To accompany an exhibition of over 50 items from the Ken Stradling Collection curated by Margaret Howell, Inventory Magazine present a conversation between the collector and the designer. Shot on location in Bristol, the short film offers a glimpse into Stradling’s modern design archive, and sees the pair discuss not only the origins, but also the depth and breadth of his collection. It captures the diversity of Stradling’s surroundings and touches upon the work of Marcel Breuer for Bristol furniture manufacturer Crofton Gane.
